Mars Rover Fans Makes New Discovery from Images Sent By Curiosity

NASA's Mars rover Curiosity, a car-sized robotic rover exploring Gale Crater on Mars as part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission, since beginning of its mission on the Red Planet keep on sending several images of the planet.

These images are further scrutinized by the global Mars rover fans, who try to make a new discovery every time they look deep into the pictures. Recent discovery was of something that looks very similar to small artillery cannon, a barrel mounted on wheels, which is supposed to be from the US Civil War.

It has been reported that Mars rover fans usually scrutinize the images sent by Curiosity with imaginative flair. But the space agency NASA has not clarified whether these images depicts a war cannon or not.

The latest image was taken on July 29, 2014, or on Sol 723, in terms of Martian days. The images were captured by the Curiosity rover's right mastcam. Scientists said that the rover also has a left mastcam, right navcams as well as a left and right hazcams on the front and rear.

Scientists stated that all camera fitted on the Curiosity are steadily clicking thousand of image of the planet and is also sending it to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The rover does not send the entire data on earth at once, but some of the data is sent after sometime, said NASA. Therefore, it said that date mentioned on the picture is not the date on which it was transmitted but it has the date on which it was clicked.

NASA said the images sent by the rover also has a time stamp, given in UTC (the initials for Coordinated Universal Time in French), which is similar to the Greenwich Mean Time.

Some other mysterious items that are spotted by viewers in Mars rover photos include a toy boat, traffic light, thigh bone, two dinosaurs in one photo, a dot of light above the Martian hills.
