The Democratic Alliance has asked Eskom Directors to return the bonus awarded to them for purchase of generators for emergency services. Nine members of Eskom Board of directors have received R31 million in bonus.
The emergency services in the country have been impacted due to power crisis. After heavy rains this week, the coal stock at Eskom has become wet, causing massive power cuts across the region.
Democratic Alliance MP Natasha Michael said that board members cannot justify the bonus they have received as the nation is suffering massive power cuts. The rolling blackouts have led to difficult times for businesses and local population. DA has demanded change in the Eskom board as the current team has been inefficient. The power prices have been raised by 8 percent last year. Eskom had asked for 16 percent increase but the demand was declined by the National Energy Regulator.
The Eskom management has failed to start with Medupi power station in time. Due to the delay in project work, the deadline has been extended three times. The higher prices of power have also been criticized by DA. The cost of Medupi power project has also been raised from R91 to R105 billion.
