According to new study, force feeding children and asking them to finish them everything served on the plate might actually be harmful to them and disrupt their eating habits and may even lead to being overweight.
Most parents often force-feed their children because of the common belief that children have to get enough nutrition. However, the new study shows that force-feeding may actually be bad for children as it may make them vulnerable to unhealthy weight gain. The researchers said that the it is important to allow children to decide how much they want to eat in order to allow them develop normal eating behaviour.
The study said, "If children are pushed to eat everything on their plates, they may stop relying on their own body's signals, and eat until the parents are happy. We have looked to see if physical activity, television time and appetite traits can explain why some children's body mass index (BMI) increases more than others' do."
Silje Steinsbekk, assistant professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, said that the way children relate to food is important. The researcher said that BMI increases more in children where food for whom food triggers their eating behaviour.
The findings were published in the Journal of Paediatric Psychology.
