Experts have said that a fasting schedule of five days can help stop the sings of ageing and extend several health benefits.
Experts said that following a five day diet which mimics fasting can offer benefits like slowing down ageing, reducing risk of cancer and heart disease. Health experts said that people can live longer simply by cutting the number of calories they consume by about half for five days every month.
A group of researchers at the University of Southern California developed a diet plan called the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD) that includes five days fasting for maximum effect. The team said people can use this diet plan four times a year to reduce their risk of heart disease and cancer and to boost their immune system. They said that it will also help them lose weight and look younger.
Prof Valter Longo, aProfessor in Gerontology and Biological Science at the USC, and Director of its Longevity Institute and one of the scientists behind the new idea, pointed out that strict fasting is not easy and might also be dangerous for some people.
