A number of studies have already warned that global warming is behind rapid melting of snow reservoir across the globe and rise in sea levels. But a new study has revealed that the shrinking of snowpack could affect many people in northern hemisphere.
There are many studies warming that snowpack across the globe will be declined due to global warming by mid-century, but they didn’t mention it will also affect drinking water supplies. The study published in the journal Environmental Research Letters revealed that about two billion people in northern hemisphere could suffer water shortages due to decline in snowpack.
Study researchers said reduced snowpack will affect water supplies very badly by 2060. Regions like California, which is experiencing drought from last more than four years, to Middle East is going to be badly affected by this snowpack decrease, the researchers from Europe and the US warned.
The researchers also predicted that about 100 water basins, which are dependent on northern hemisphere snow, could face the problem of water shortage in near future. Justin Mankin, a researcher from Columbia University's Earth Institute in New York and lead author of the study, said people should prepare for a world without snow reservoir.
The study showed, “Basins in northern and central California, the Ebro-Duero basin in Portugal, Spain and southern France and the Shatt al-Arab basin affecting much of the Middle East including Iraq and Syria count among those most sensitive to changes”. According to the researchers, in these locations, global warming is disrupting snow accumulation.
