Scientists develop new techniques to spot alien life

A team of scientists have developed new techniques to detect alien life forms on other planets through detecting biosignatures on those planets.

They might have found a way to detect biosignatures of life on other worlds. It is believed that if organisms with nonphotosynthetic pigments cover enough parts of the planet, thespectral signal could be detected by powerful telescopes in the future. It has been difficult to detect lifeforms if they do not rely on photosynthesis.

Edward Schwieterman, one of the researchers, said in a media release that, "I was interested in doing biology in the lab and linking it to remotely detectable biosignatures, which are indications there is life on a planet based on observations that could be made from a space-based telescope or large ground-based telescope."

Experts said that pigments that absorb light are helpful to earthly organisms besides just producing electricity. Some of those protect against the sun's radiation or have antioxidants allowing some organisms to survive in extreme environments. The team now aims to detect these pigments rather than photosynthesis to detect life on other planets. They theory was also tested on Virtual Planetary Laboratory spectral models to simulate detection on life forms.
