Analyst firm NPD group recently reported that Chromebook sales have been impressive during the current year. As per latest figures, Chromebook sales accounts for 21% of all existing notebook sales in 2013 in United States. This further means that about 14.4 million desktop PCs, notebooks and tablets were sold through commercial channels till November.
Chromebooks are low powered, low priced and run on Google’s Chrome operating system (OS). This means that they are platform specific, and can only run on Chrome browsers and not on any other OS.
Despite of all these facts, the NPD has noted 21% sale of Chromebooks across the US, which is much higher than the market share in earlier years. The sales of Chromebooks in US have been increased so far till November that they now account for 8% of all computers and tablet sales.
This rate was calculated to be only 1% in 2012. Also there seems to have an increase in sales of Android tablets in US by more than 160% in 2013. After seeing a gradual increase in sales of Google products, NPD has declared this year to be a stellar year for Google.
It has been expected that traditional Chromebook players like Acer, Samsung and HP will release new machines to compete for buyers on the Chromebook platform in 2014. Most Chromebooks come with low end hardware specifications and smaller hard drive. Google offers cloud space for users to store their files online.
