A leading healthcare charity in the UK has said that more nurses are needed urgently in the healthcare system in order to address the growing number of women diagnosed with breast cancer.
The data has shown that the number of women diagnosed with breast cancer has risen by a fifth during the previous decade. However, there is a lack of specialist nurses and this is impacting patient care in the country. Data showed that the number of new cases of breast cancer in England have increased by an alarming 18 per cent from 38,153 in 2003 to 44,831 in 2013. The number increased 20 per cent in Wales and Scotland.
The data also showed that the number of breast cancer nurses remained around 430 across England through the period since the records began. Experts said that specialist nurses are essential for providing effective care to the patients. However, experts said that the quality of healthcare might reduce due to no additional investment in healthcare.
Samia al Qadhi, chief executive of Breast Cancer Care, said, “Breast cancer nurses do a fantastic job but they are under more and more pressure to provide the same quality of care with much less time, more responsibilities and many more patients. We welcome the Cancer Strategy recommendation that every cancer patient should have access to a specialist nurse, but the next step is how we make that a reality.” Qadhi acknowledged that the NHS is facing budget cuts and have pressure to save costs but pointed out that steps are required to be taken as the number of breast cancer cases rises in the country.
A spokeswoman for NHS England responded by saying that the number of clinical nurse specialists are decided by individual hospitals and also pointed out that the overall nursing staff numbers have risen.
