For the first time, China has emitted greenhouse gases more than the European Union on per capita basis. In fact, it emits more than America and the EU combined.
The news is upsetting, as the world is already suffering a lot due to rise in climate change level. It is considered that China will be asked in the global climate summit in New York to be held this week to reduce its emission levels.
A lot many activities have been taking place across countries, where activists have been asking leaders to address climate change and take action to reduce the same. Last week, activists had carried out more than 2,000 demonstrations and have asked countries like China to take climate change seriously.
China seems to be making efforts to bring a decline and it can be said that the nation has been able to make global emissions grow at a little slow pace. In 2013, its emissions increased 2.3% to 36.1 billion tonnes, which as per the Global Carbon Project, was less than the past decade growth of 2.5%.
This little decline is said to be the result of China's economic slowdown. But the real difference will come with the nation's new pledge 'war on pollution'. Current situation may raise the possibility that Chinese leaders get serious about handling China's carbon emissions.
"There is a popular mandate for cleaning up the environment. The point being that people aren't going to take it anymore", affirmed Charles Yonts, head of sustainable research at CLSA.
Out of 34, 12 China's provinces have promised to reduce coal consumption. In fact, 10 provinces have started to notice the difference as their absolute levels of coal consumption have dropped between 2011 and 2012. But it is being said that it will take time when China's contribution to climate change starts to ebb.
