Chinese space agency has launched the country's most sophisticated observation satellite, which is a part of the country's larger HDEarth observation initiative.
The satellite named, Gaofen-9 was successfully launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in Gansu provinceaboard a Long March-2D carrier rocket at 12.42 p.m local time. Media reports in the Asian country showed that it was the 209th flight of the Long March rocket series. The two-stage Long March 2D rocket put the civilian-operated craft into orbit. The new HD optical remote sensing satellite will enhance the country's abilities in capturing very clear photographs.
The new satellite is said to be capable of taking photographs with a resolution of less than a metre. It is believed that the satellite will be used in land survey, urban planning, road network design, agriculture, and disaster relief as well as cater to the needs of important national strategies such as the Belt and Road Initiative and national defence. It was developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology. The first satellite of the series Gaofen-1 was launched in April 2013.
Media reports showed that China has launched new rockets in two days. The launches put an experimental communications satellite and the HD satellite into orbit.
