This week, three bigwig German automakers -- Volkswagen (VW), BMW, and Daimler AG - said that they are issuing a recall of a total of 2.5 million...
In a Friday announcement, bigwig US wireless carrier AT&T shared details about its planned 5G network roadmap for the year 2016. The company said that it has plans underway to commence the field testing of its super-fast 5G network in Austin, Texas, before the end of the year.
The ultra-high-speed 5G network marks the next generation of wireless data technology which will have the capability to deliver 100 times faster Internet speeds as compared to the currently-in-use 4G LTE services. For delivering ultra-fast Internet speeds, 5G will use technologies like millimeter waves, network function virtualization (NFV), and software-defined networking (SDN).
Going by the details unfolded by AT&T, the company's planned field testing of the 5G network in 2016 will come after laboratory tests of the super-fast 5G technology in the AT&T labs, together with Ericsson and Intel, in the second quarter. After the successful completion of lab testing of the super-fast Internet speeds, AT&T will begin the outdoor testing of the 5G network in summer this year.
Highlighting the imminent testing of 5G technology in lab as well as outdoor, AT&T said that the comprehensive testing of the 5G network will give the company valuable input for an extensive 5G rollout when the standards for the technology are set officially.
AT&T also added that "an early use of 5G's underlying technology could be delivering broadband to homes and businesses;" and explained that the outcome of the 5G trials may enable the company to offer "limited commercial availability this year."
