Sprint reportedly proposes merger with Charter

Seeking an alternative to a deal with T-Mobile USA, Sprint Corporation has reportedly proposed a merger with rival telecommunications giant Charter Inc.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a person familiar with the matter revealed that Japan-based SoftBank Group Corp., which controls Sprint, has proposed a complex transaction that would create a new entity that would be controlled by SoftBank.

The sources added that there is no guarantee that Charter would also be interested in the proposed merger.

Johannesburg-based Barclays Africa Group’s discouraging earnings report has delivered further evidence of South Africa’s gloomy economy.

The lender reported 10 percent decline in earnings excluding one-time items at its main South African consumer unit in the 6 months through June this year. Deposits fell 14 per cent.

Maria Ramos, who took charge as CEO of Barclays Africa in 2009, admitted that the economic environment would like remain “challenging” for the next many months.

Luca Solca, an analyst with Exane BNP Paribas, said, “Again, Michael Kors follows the path of Coach -- and again, on steroids. After a meteoric rise and spectacular crash, it is now the time to recycle cash into other brands.”

Asian tech giants invest $2.5 billion in taxi-hailing service Grab

Uber’s South East Asian competitor Grab has raised $2 billion (£1.5bn) from Japanese technology giant Softbank and its China-based equivalent Didi Chuxing.

Grab is expected to raise an additional amount of $500 million (£385m) from some other tech investors before the ongoing round of funding is closed, which would bring the total investment amount for the round to $2.5 billion (£1.9bn).

Citing anonymous sources, the Korea Economic Daily recently reported that LG Chem has been selected by Apple as an exclusive supplier for batteries for its next-next-generation iPhone.

The deal is for batteries for the device which is due for release sometime in 2018. The anonymous sources also suggested that the “iPhone 9” would likely debut in the 2nd half of 2018.

Redmond-based tech giant Microsoft Corporation on Thursday posted better than expected earnings for the last three months, thanks to strong performance of its cloud business. Microsoft announced non-GAAP revenue and GAAP earnings per share of $24.7 billion and $0.83, respectively. Non-GAAP earnings per share were reported $0.98. Non-GAAP operating income was reported at $7.0 billion.

Strong performance of cloud business particularly helped the company in beating Wall Street analysts’ predictions.
