World-famous fiesta draws thousands; man killed in horse race

An elderly man was killed in a horse race at a birthday party in central Mexico’s San Luis Potosi state, turning the celebrations into a tragedy on Monday, authorities confirmed.

The party was organized to celebrate Rubi Ibarra Garcia’s 15th birthday, but it turned into a tragedy when 66-year-old Felix Pena was trampled to death during the race. Pena worked at a local stable and regularly raced horses.

Another male person had to be taken to the hospital as suffered a broken leg after falling into the racing horses’ path. Local authorities have opened an investigation into the deadly incident.

The birthday party also hit headlines after the teenager’s family accidentally made the invite a public post on Facebook, and it went viral.

Rubi’s father Crescencio Ibarra said in 45-second clip posted on Facebook, “We invite you on December 26 to our daughter Rubi Ibarra Garcia’s quinceañera in La Joya … Everyone is cordially invited.”

More than 1.3 million Facebook users responded to the invitation, and said they would try their beast attend it. The attendance fell far short of that number, but it was still quite large for a birthday party in the small town of La Joya, with more than 20,000 attendees.
