Chipotle Mexican Grill’s Twitter Account Hacked for Two Hours

Chipotle Mexican Grill's Twitter account remained under control of hackers for about two hours during the Sunday night. The company said in a statement that hackers within those two hours posted a series of offensive tweets on their Twitter account.

The company said that the hackers replaced Chipotle's avatar with a swastika, and tweeted several racial comments using vulgar language, including ones directed at President Barack Obama and various US government agencies.

The US based restaurant chain removed the offensive tweets, and instead posted a message on its Twitter feed apologizing for the very offensive messages.

Chris Arnold, a company spokesman, said, "We apologize for the nature of the posts that were made during that time, and we are now conducting an investigation to try to determine what happened and who might have been involved".

As per company officials, the offensive tweets began emerging from the @ChipotleTweets account at about 1 am ET on Sunday. The @ChipotleTweets account has 630,000 followers.

The hacker, who called themselves `The Celtic God', apart from targeting President Obama posted that the company will close down all of its restaurants by the end of 2015 because its food supply had been poisoned.

The hackers in their tweets called the government as frauds and bullies. Now several hours after the incident it seems that the company has managed to reestablished control of its Twitter account and deleted all the tweets posted by the hackers.

In addition, Chipotle in 2013 admitted that it faked the hijacking of its Twitter account, which the company said was part of a promotional campaign for its 20th anniversary. But seeing the nature of the recently posted tweets, it does not seem that this was a similar stunt.
