Updated Unicode version adds hundreds of new ‘emoji’

Character-encoding standard Unicode has recently been updated to version 7.0, which brings along hundreds of new 'emoji' - the small pictorial representations of things such as a smiling face, a shining sun, or a thumbs-up, among hordes of others - and numerous other updates.

The new 'emoji' which have made their way to the updated Unicode version include spider, chili pepper, dark sunglasses, a hammer, an airplane arriving, a rocket, a satellite, 'live long and prosper' and several others.

Some of the other 'emojis' - out of a total of 50 new additions - which will be added to Unicode as a result of the 7.0 update include floppy disks, the Vulcan salute, "wind blowing face,"and a black skull and crossbones.

In addition, other 'emoji' inclusions in Unicode version 7.0 are new symbols for the Russian ruble and the Azerbaijani manat, along with many other symbols, historical scripts and updates to existing scripts. With the standard kept by the Unicode consortium, the new additions support "written languages of North America, China, India, other Asian countries, and Africa."

The Unicode 7.0 software update from Apple, Google and Microsoft will add the new 'emojis' to the Emojipedia in July.
