Apple: New iOS 8 feature will change the way iPhones protect users' data

With Apple having highlighted the user-accessible privacy controls of its new iOS version - iOS 8 - during its WWDC keynote last week, the company has revealed that a new feature will be included in iOS 8 to change the way users' data will be safeguarded by iPhones.

Asserting that the new iOS 8 feature will stop essentially stop data-collection, Apple said that the change in security mechanism involves the use of random MAC addresses by iPhones - rather than a static unique identifier -when they scan for WiFi networks.

According to Apple, the inclusion of the new feature in iOS 8 update will pose increased difficulties for marketing and analytics companies in their attempts to track the movements and behaviors of the users.

About the new security-related feature in the iOS 8, Apple software engineer Katie Skinner - who specializes in product security and privacy - said that, in the latest iOS version, the MAC address during probe requests will be "random" and "locally administrated."

Skinner further added: "This means if you interact or design a piece of external hardware you should not count on a stable MAC address until after authentication. Go test on iOS 8 and understand the impact this may have for you."
