Facebook's Parse backend-as-a-service subsidiary adds support for ‘Swift’

Facebook's backend-as-a-service subsidiary Parse has revealed in a recent blog post that it has added support for 'Swift' - Apple's new programming language. Parse's announcement of its decision to embrace Swift comes close on the heels of the release of the Swift programming language by Apple on the opening day of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 2.

Announcing that Swift is the new programming language for iOS mobile and OS X desktop environments, Apple had touted Swift as a replacement for Objective-C, the iOS and OS X programming language which was created in 1983.

Parse's addition of support for Swift underscores a relatively effortless process, thanks to Swift's compatibility with existing Objective-C libraries. Although Swift, as of now, is not as fast as Objective-C in terms of code execution speed, the new programming language chiefly unfolds a new mechanism for addressing Apple's current Cocoa and Cocoa Touch APIs.

About Parse's move to add support for Swift, the company's Fosco Marroto in the blog post: "Here at Parse, we're really excited about Swift, because it brings a whole host of new language features to iOS and OS X development."

Marroto further added: "Swift's type inference will save developers a ton of typing. And generics will reduce runtime errors by giving us strongly-typed collections."
