Young Bald Eagle Shot in Otsego County

According to New York State Wildlife officials, a young bald eagle was gun shot in Otsego County. The incident happened in the county prior to April 25.

The bald eagle is recovering after surgery on its wing. Claudia Wheatley, spokeswoman for the Cornell Veterinary School said that the bald eagle will never be able to fly again and cannot go back to the wild.

A hiker found the bird on Saturday. The New York Wildlife Rescue Center in Schoharie County first treated the bird and then the bird was taken to the Cornell facility. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest of the person who shot it.

Payment will be made leading the arrest and conviction of the person accountable. The bird has severe injuries to one of her wings and was also dehydrated and starving.

Wes Laraway, executive director the New York Wildlife Rescue Center in Middleburgh said that condition of the birds stabilized and could survive. Anyone who knows anything about the incident can call the DEC hotline at 1-844-332-3267.

“It’s horrible what someone did to this bird. I hope those responsible are brought to justice”, said Laraway.
