Yoga can efficiently ease depression: Research

Yoga can not only efficiently help relax your body and mind but also ease psychological disorders like depression, a new study revealed.

In the first-of-its-kind study, a team of researchers found that symptoms of depression significantly improved once patients committed to yoga merely two times a week.

The researchers studied 23 male veterans who participated in twice-weekly hatha yoga classes, emphasizing physical exercises, meditation and breathing exercises, for a couple of weeks.

Those who started the study with elevated levels of depression saw their symptoms ease significantly after just eight weeks.

Dr. Sudha Prathikanti, the Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at UCSF, said “Once the initial sequence of yoga therapy is learned properly, this is something you can do on your own. We had 60 percent remission rate in the yoga group. That was actually fairly surprising to us.”

According to the CDC, depression affects as many as 15 million adults in the United States alone during a given year.

The researchers shared the results of the study at the recently held annual meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA) in Washington, D.C.
