Xiaomi surpasses Samsung to become No. 1 smartphone vendor in China

The latest statistics released by research group Canalys on Monday show that Chinese device maker Xiaomi Inc. has become the biggest smartphone vendor in China, overthrowing bigwig South Korean firm Samsung in the 2014 second quarter.

According to the Canalys data, a total of nearly 15 million smartphones were shipped by Xiaomi in the April-June quarter; beating Samsung's 13.2 million smartphone shipments in the same period.

Revealing that Xiaomi has become the top-ranking smartphone vendor in China, the Canalys report has disclosed that the smartphone sales of Xiaomi in the second quarter were largely bolstered by the strong sales of the company's low-cost RedMi range.

The Canalys figures show that Xiaomi's second-quarter samrtphone sales in China increased by a staggering 240 percent year-on-year; thereby notching up the company's China smartphone market share to a notable 14 percent. In comparison, Samsung share of the Chinese smartphone market plunged from 15 percent to 12 percent year-on-year.

In reference to the plunge in Samsung's smartphone market share in China, CCS Insight analyst Geoff Blaber told The Times: "The competition from local players is really starting to have an impact on Samsung. Unless Samsung really starts to differentiate beyond hardware - in software and services - then it's difficult to see how Samsung is going to avoid losing further market share."
