World Doping Conference to Be Held in Johannesburg

According to the South African Sports Ministry, the World Anti-Doping Agency is set to stage the next World Conference on Doping in Sport in Johannesburg after Johannesburg beat out Dallas (United States) and Sochi (Russia) in their bids to host the event during a meeting in Durban.

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula signed the memorandum of agreement that sealed the deal on behalf of the South African Sports Ministry in Durban while on the sidelines of the International Olympic Committee's 123rd Session.

According to Deputy Minister of the Sport and Recreation Department, Gert Oosthuizen, hosting the conference will accomplish many things for South Africa and the world, including enhancing the reputation of the country and proving again that South Africa is capable of hosting world-class events.

As well, Mr. Oosthuizen added: "This is for various reasons, like to root out the scourge of doping in sport, it is to educate the athletes, the administrators, the coaches about the risks involved with that but also to have fair play, to say no to doping, I play fair".

Doping is the commonly used term that refers to a practice in sports in which athletes used prohibited means or substances to unfairly gain a competitive advantage in a sporting competition.
