World determined to shift to low emissions: U.N. climate chief says

There is no doubt that the whole world is determined to shift to a low-emission and resilient society, the United Nation’s climate chief Patricia Espinosa said during a meeting of delegates in the Moroccan city of Marrakech.

Amid uncertainty over how the U.S. presidential election will affect the landmark Paris Agreement, Espinosa told delegates that nobody can doubt that the world needs to change.

Speaking on the topic, Espinosa said, “No politician or citizen, no business manager or investor’ can doubt that the world is determined to shift to a low-emission, resilient society.”

Climate negotiators recently started working on implementation of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, but many remains concerned that the U.S. election may affect the deal as Republican candidate Donald Trump has repeatedly refuted global warming and spoken against the deal.

Brazilian Environment Minister Sarney Filho has even said that he, on a personal note, hoped that Trump should not win because the deal would suffer if he becomes the next U.S. president.

More than 190 countries, including top polluters like the U.S., China and India, have signed the Paris Agreement, agreeing to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius and even bring it down to 1.5 degrees Celsius by cutting man-made emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases.
