Whiskey and tequila again beat beer in 2014 in terms of sales

In 2014, whiskey and tequila have shown a rise in the sales. They have again beaten the beer at US bars and liquor stores.

On Tuesday, the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States or Discus reported that last year 35.2% of the market was accounted by hard liquor, a little up from 34% in 2013.

Domestic volume shot up 7.4% to 19.4 million cases and the gains in revenue and volume were similar to the increases reported in 2013.

Beer is the most popular alcoholic beverage in the country with 47.8% share while the sales of wine remained still at 17%.

Beer's market share has shown a continuous downfall. In 1999, its share was 56% and in 2010 it declined below 50%.

According to the reports, Kentucky bourbon and Tennessee whiskey have shown a great rise in the export numbers. In 2014, their total exports remained at $1.2 billion. In case of hard liquor, it constitutes 70% of all US exports.

Christine LoCascio, the council's senior vice president for international trade, said "Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey is the story".

In terms of volume, tequila sales shot up by 5% with 15% growth in the top brands.

Overall, wholesale liquor showed a 4% rise to $23.1 billion. Retail sales were almost $70 billion.

Sales from producers or suppliers to the wholesalers are reflected in the domestic numbers.
