UK doctors have to record FGM cases

Health authorities in the UK has made set a deadline for the doctors in the country to start recording cases of female genital mutilation by October.

The new mandate is a part of the global effort to eradicate the "brutal practice" in one generation. The government in the UK is aiming to wipe out this practice from the country completely. The move comes just two days after a British doctor was accused of carrying out female genital mutilation on a new mother. It is the country's first FGM trial and is aimed at preventing doctors from aiding the practice.

The trail took of Dhanuson Dharmasena occurred at a time when there is significant public anger against the practice in the UK and around the world. There is much public anger over the failure of the authorities in the UK to put anyone on trial for the practice even as the practice was outlawed in the country about three decades earlier.

Data showed that about 137,000 women and girls in England and Wales have already undergone FGM, which is the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. The practice can cause serious physical and psychological problems and complications in childbirth.
