TurboTax Resumes return filing for State Taxes

TurboTax, the most populat do-it-yourself tax preparation software developed by Intuit, was temporarily shut down due to some fraudulent tax returns filed with the system, using stolen personal information.

The process of filing state tax returns through the online system was halted for approximately twenty four hours.

According to Intuit, the parent company of TurboTax, the filing for state returns was resumed at around six in the evening. As the state agencies reported a spike in tax filings with stolen personal data, the company immediately shut down the process on Friday.

Julie Miller, a spokeswoman for Intuit said that many of the victims of the fraudulent filings discovered that a fake tax return has been submitted with their name after receiving a rejection notice when they filed their returns.

Miller said, in case of federal returns there have not been any such issues till now as the Internal Revenue Service implements a stricter policy of fraud detection.

The recent problem is being investigated by Intuit with help from Palantir, a security solutions company.

Intuit says that till now no security breach has been detected in its own systems and the company believes that the personal information used for filing fake tax returns was stolen somewhere else.
