Toyota to make advanced safety features a standard in all models by 2017

At its advanced safety seminar held in Michigan earlier this week, Toyota has asserted that it plans to make advanced safety features a standard in all models by 2017. The automaker apparently has no plans to come up with driverless cars.

Announcing that Toyota - which is the top-ranking automaker worldwide in terms of sales - plans to focus on safety in cars, the company's Deputy Chief Safety Technology Officer Seigo Kuzumaki said at the seminar that the advanced safety features which Toyota plans to bring to all cars include features like forward-collision avoidance, lane departure and dynamic cruise control.

Kuzumaki said that Toyota will offer these features across its entire product line, including its smallest and least expensive cars, by 2017.

In addition, Kuzumaki also said that Toyota is considering an increase in investment in its Collaborative Safety Research Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, by $35 million over the coming five-year period. The key focus of this initiative - in collaboration with several academic partners - will essentially be on automated technology, human-machine interface and wireless communication among vehicles and the transportation infrastructure. Noting that Toyota's envisions "a world without traffic fatalities," Kuzumaki said: "These advanced connected and automated vehicle technologies hold the potential to revolutionize automotive safety."
