Time for Flu Vaccine Again

Time for Flu Vaccine Again

It is very important for the whole family to get flu vaccine. This year, health officials have different advices for different age groups.

Certain kids should opt for nasal spray and seniors can expect to get a new type of pneumonia shot along with that flu jab.

"The best way to protect yourself against the flu is to get a flu vaccination", said CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden on Thursday.

Many young and middle-age adults miss out the vaccine altogether. The government suggests a yearly flu vaccine for everyone starting at six months of age. About 24,000 Americans in a year lose their lives due to flu, said the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Last year, vaccination rate was highest for children under 5 and was 70% and for seniors, it was 65%.

Dr. Paul Offit of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia said that about 55% of school-age children were vaccinated. It is important for parents to understand that flu vaccine is important even for healthy and fit children.

Last year, minimum 100 children died of flu and 50 of them were suffering from lung conditions or other illnesses and the majority of them were not vaccinated.

Obstetrician Dr. Laura Riley of Massachusetts General Hospital affirmed that about half of pregnant women get vaccinated. The shot can be received at any trimester. It also protects the baby during the first few months of life.

According to the CDC, the research unveiled that the ouchless FluMist nasal spray works a little better for children ages 2 to 8. This year, the CDC is asking people of 65 and older to get a new type of pneumonia vaccine along with their flu shot.
