‘Super heroin’ becoming more dangerous and fatal

A strong version of a street drug, which is commonly known as “super heroin,” is becoming even more dangerous, the Cook County medical examiner’s office warned.

The so-called “super heroin” has already caused hundreds of fatal overdoses in Chicago in its surrounding areas far this year. Now, the drug peddlers are reportedly synthetically boosting its potency, making it more fatal.

For the first time, the Cook County medical examiner’s office found that the man-made opioid carfentanil was responsible for an overdose death that claimed the life of 46-year-old Chicago man in September this year.

Issuing a warning to police about fentanyl and its analogs, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration said in a statement, “You actually felt like you were dying. You couldn't breathe. Very disoriented … It was the most bizarre feeling that I never, ever would want to feel again.”

A second synthetic opioid called 3-methylfentanyl was found responsible for another overdose death that claimed the life a 35-year-old Lake Zurich man in June.

Carfentanil and 3-methylfentanyl are 10,000 and 400 times more potent than morphine, respectively. Normally, these substances are used as elephant tranquilizers.
