Sony’s Project Morpheus VR to take on Facebook’s Oculus headset

Sony’s Project Morpheus VR to take on Facebook’s Oculus headset

The scheduled proceedings at the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) on Monday night included the showcasing of the Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) headset by Sony. The Morpheus works with the PS4, which has improved hardware and high-definition audio.

With Sony developing the Project Morpheus VR headset for the gaming market, the headset will essentially challenge the Oculus Rift VR headset from the pioneer of VR goggles, Oculus VR, which has now been acquired by Facebook.

Despite the fact that gaming will be the first killer application for Sony's Project Morpheus VR headset, the company's movie and TV studios can feed its popular PlayStation consoles with VR-ready content; thereby making Project Morpheus an attractive accessory for non-gamers too.

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai apparently plans to use Project Morpheus for delivering a wide range of offerings via the Web, in an evident attempt to challenge Apple, Google, Samsung, and Facebook.

Meanwhile, in reaction to Sony's efforts in the VR arena through it Project Morpheus headset, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe said: "Sony getting into the mix helps;" and added:"They're invested in being an early adopter and one of the first to figure out how virtual reality and gaming entertainment work together."
