Snapchat is reportedly working on wearable AR device

Popular social media platform Snapchat has become the newest member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (Bluetooth SIG), amid rumors that the company is apparently planning to extend its presence into hardware by offering a wearable augmented reality (AR) device.

By enrolling itself in the Bluetooth SIG, Snapchat has joined some of the other high-profile members of the group including Google, Microsoft, Intel, and Facebook. Tech giant Apple has been serving on the Bluetooth SIG Board of Directors since 2011; and, thus, has a say in the future of the wireless technology.

Snapchat’s enrollment in the Bluetooth SIG is being considered to be an indication of the company’s evident plans to launch a wearable AR device, especially since the membership of the Bluetooth oversight group is required for companies interested in launching devices that make use of the low-power wireless technology.

Towards that end, the Financial Times has revealed in a recent report that Snapchat is developing a pair of "augmented reality goggles."

Meanwhile, though Snapchat has not officially announced any timeframe for the potential launch of its wearable AR device, the company's camera-equipped sunglasses were worn in public by CEO Evan Spiegel nearly a year back; thereby leading to speculations that the hardware has been in testing for some time.
