Smartphone extravaganza in 2014; big-screen handsets became popular
The year 2014 witnessed an extravaganza of sorts on the smartphone front; with several noteworthy handsets having been launched by major vendors like Apple, Samsung, LG, Sony and Xiaomi. In addition, the year also marked the definitive arrival of Chinese handset makers in the Indian market.
Among the Chinese handset manufacturers which ventured into the India smartphone arena in 2014 were Xiaomi, Oppo, Lenovo, Huawei, and OnePlus; with Gionee and Asus already having foray into the Indian market earlier. These companies offered aggressively-priced - under Rs 10,000 - handsets to Indian consumers; much to the astonishment of most of the smartphone titans.
Despite the fact that a lot of handsets were launched by Indian handset makers like Micromax, Karbonn, Lava, Xolo, and Spice in 2014, the last six months of the year were largely dominated by Xiaomi.
Meanwhile, a notable change which the year 2014 brought to the smartphone market was that bigger screen handsets - 'phablets' with 4.5-inch and 5-inch screen sizes - apparently became a standard in smartphones.
The increasing popularity of 'phablets' this year is quite evident from the fact that some of the new flagship handsets from leading brands, like Google Nexus 6, touched 6 inches in screen size. Moreover, even Apple's latest iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus models were big-screen handsets; boasting 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays respectively.
