Sky gazers admire extraordinary larger, brighter moon

As the most recent full moon made its way across the skies on Sunday evening and Monday morning, sky gazers around the globe admired the extraordinary larger and brighter natural satellite.

The bigger, brighter supermoon appeared in all of its glory Sunday night (Nov. 13), and peaked Monday morning (Nov. 14) at 8:52 a.m. EST or 1352 GMT. NASA astronomers estimated that it was 14 per cent larger than a typical full moon.

Noah Petro, a planetary geologist with NASA, said, “Everyone gets to see the moon.... It's a great shared resource for all humanity.”

In Australia, several of sky-watchers climbed to the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge to capture a closer sight of the moon. Photographer Chris Cook captured a self-portrait with the super-duper supermoon in the background in Eastham, Massachusetts.

A supermoon, which is also known as a blood/red moon, is produced when Earth’s shadow cast a reddish radiance on the moon, marking a rare blend of an eclipse with the closest full moon of this year.

The supermoon looked extraordinarily bigger as well as brighter than a typical moon as it approached the closest point in its orbit to Earth since 1948. At the closest point (perigee), the distance between Earth and its only natural satellite was just 221,524 miles. Such a dazzling lunar sight won’t be available again until 2034.
