Several developing ‘countries’ hidden within borders of USA: study

The United States would look quite different if its fifty states were organized as per their residents’ income instead of geography because several states within the borders of the developed U.S. are still underdeveloped.

A team of researchers from Tennessee State University noted that the median household income for a family of four in the poorest state would have just above the federal poverty line if the states were organized as per their incomes. In addition, residents of the poorest state would be living shorter lives than people in at least half of the world’s countries.

Study authors wrote, “In essence, there are several developing countries hidden within the borders of the United States – regions defined, in this case, by poverty. The ‘state’ of poverty in this country is dramatic and deeply disturbing.”

The researchers reached the conclusions after examining the nation’s 3,141 counties and their median household incomes. The income data from 2009 to 2013 was provided by the federal Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

Nearly 2 per cent of counties with the lowest median income of households would have comprised the poorest “state” in the union. The next 2 per cent of counties would have been the second-poorest “state” in the alternative USA.

The findings of the first-of-its-kind study were detailed in Nov. 17th issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
