Secretive hacking group has been conducting cyber-espionage attacks since at lea

In a blog post published on Sunday, US-based antivirus software maker Symantec said that a previously undetected, secretive hacking group - called 'Strider' - has been using advanced spyware programs, since at least October 2011, to carry out cyber-espionage attacks against organizations and individuals in Europe, Russia, and China.

In an indication that the Strider hacking group may possibly be linked to espionage, Symantec said in its blog post that the victims of the secretive hacking group chiefly included "organizations and individuals that would be of interest to a nation state's intelligence services."

According to the details shared by Symantec, the spyware program used by the Strider hacking group is called Remsec.

The Remsec spyware includes modules which have the capability to load, and execute, files from a disk or a network connection. In addition, the spyware can also apparently log keystrokes, and is capable of creating 'backdoors' in HTTP code as well as parts of the Windows operating system.

Highlighting the fact that the targets of the Strider hacking group include a number of Russian organizations and individuals, a Chinese airline, and an embassy in Belgium, Symantec said in the blog post: "Based on the espionage capabilities of its malware and the nature of its known targets, it is possible that the group is a nation-state level attacker."
