Science Channel cancels ‘Punkin Chunkin’ special after cannon accident

An accident that left a woman injured during an event earlier this month in Delaware prompted the Science Channel not to televise its planned three-hour “Punkin Chunkin” special on Nov. 26, 2016.

Organized by the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association, Punkin Chunkin is a competitive event in which teams vie to hurl pumpkins long distances with the help of homemade mechanical launchers.

This year’s event was to return to television with a new contest after a gap of two years. Science Channel had planned a special show that would have also been aired on Discovery Channel. But, the accident prompted it to scrap that plan.

Science Channel spokesperson Paul Schur said, “In light of the unfortunate incident at the Punkin Chunkin event on Nov. 6, Science Channel will not air ‘Punkin Chunkin’ as originally planned. We are sending our hopes and prayers for a full recovery to the injured woman, her family and loved ones.”

The victim’s name hasn’t been released. However, local news outlets reported that the victim is a 39-year-old woman. She was reportedly injured when an air cannon operated by the Punkin Reaper team malfunctioned and sent a large metal plate flying. The metal plate hit the woman in the head. Her medical status wasn’t immediately clear.
