Samsung plans to launch sub-$100 Tizen-powered smartphone in India this month

In a Monday report, South Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper has revealed that bigwig South Korean device manufacturer Samsung Electronics is planning to launch a new sub-$100 smartphone in India this month.

According to the newspaper, which is a local South Korean business daily, the new Samsung smartphone to hit the Indian market will run on the company's own Tizen operating system.

The newspaper report also revealed that the new sub-$100 smartphone aimed at the Indian market will be called Z1; and will be the first Tizen handset. It will likely be launched by Samsung at a December 10 press conference.

Though the newspaper report has not yet been confirmed by a Samsung spokesperson, the company previously had plans to release a Tizen-powered handset in Russia in the 2014 third quarter. However, that plan was later scrapped; with Samsung having stated at the time that it wanted to bring improvements to the ecosystem behind Tizen OS.

At present, most of the mobile handsets manufactured by Samsung are based on Google's Android OS; with the company's Tizen software powering only a handful of mobile devices, including its smartwatch products.
