Rare antelope gives birth at Sydney's Taronga Zoo

Officials at the Sydney's Taronga Zoo have said an antelope in the zoo, which belongs to one of rarest antelope species in the world, has given birth for the third time. Officials said that the eastern bongo was born on February 8. It will be the third for mother Djembe and father Ekundu. Animal carers are yet to determine the gender of the new bornantelope.

Tracy Roberts at the Taronga Zoo said, "Djembe is a fantastic, protective mother and cleaned the calf as soon as it was born. The calf has already learnt to follow its mother around and was very curious and energetic when exploring its exhibit for the first time."

Roberts also said that 'Djembe is a protective mother and she also cleaned the calf as soon as it was born. She described the calf as 'curious and energetic' and added that it has learnt to follow its mother around.

Experts said that fewer than 100 of theseanimals are left in the wild and each calf born is important t for the survival for the species. It is believed that eastern bongo numbers have collapsed due to poaching, disease and destruction of their native habitat in Kenya's highlands.
