Nut consumption reduces risks of cancer & stroke: researchers say

Adding a handful of nuts to diet not only keeps heart healthy but also reduces risks of deadly diseases like cancer and stroke, a new study suggested.

An international team of researchers, involving health experts from the U.K. and Norway, studied the impact of nuts on risks of cancer and stroke, using 29 previously published studies from around the globe.

They analyzed data related to 819,000 participants, including nearly 12,000 cases of coronary heart disease, 9,000 cases of stroke, 18,000 cases of cancer, in addition to roughly 85,000 deaths.

The researchers from Imperial College London and Norwegian University of Science found an obvious link between nut consumption and decrease in risks of deadly diseases. They called nuts a disease-fighting powerhouse.

Study co-author Dagfinn Aune said, “We found a consistent reduction in risk across many different diseases, which is a strong indication that there is a real underlying relationship between nut consumption and different health outcomes. It’s quite a substantial effect for such a small amount of food.”

As per the study eating just a handful of nuts (roughly 20 grams) per day slashes risk of coronary heart disease, cancer and premature death by any cause by around 30 per cent, 15 per cent and 22 per cent, respectively.
