NOAA’s GOES-R weather satellite all set to be launched

The United States’ “game-changer” weather satellite, called the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite R Series (GOES-R,) is all set to be launched at 5:42 p.m. this Saturday, Nov. 17th.

GOES-R will be sent into the space using an Atlas V 541 rocket, which will blast off from Space Launch Complex 41 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today evening. Previously, the satellite’s launch was deferred multiple times due to technical issues.

The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the GOES-R satellite will enable scientists to make precise forecasts about looming severe storms, hurricanes, blizzards and lightning strikes by providing them with high-definition images.

Greg Mandt, program director for GOES-R system, said, “The forecaster’s view will be going from a black-and-white television type of view to HDTV. So what the forecaster will be able to see will be something like they’ve never seen before, and it will have incredible applications to the warning and weather forecasting process.”

Capable of scanning the entire Western Hemisphere in just five minutes, the new satellite will provide images five times faster, with four times better resolution.

GOES-R is the first in a series of four advanced weather satellites that will be launched as part of an $11 billion upgrade to the NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite program, which was introduced in to 1975.
