Nissan recalls 3.5M vehicles worldwide due to airbag issues

According to the documents posted by Nissan Group on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website on Friday, the automaker is recalling more than 3.5 million vehicles worldwide -- including nearly 3.18 million in the US -- because of airbag issues.

The recall announced by Nissan affects approximately 622,000 units of Nissan Sentras from model years 2013 to 2016. The reason behind the recall of the Sentras is that the airbag system of the vehicles can get deployed in case of a crash when it should not, as when a child is seated in the vehicle.

Nissan spokesman Steve Yaeger has revealed in an email that the issue affecting the under-recall Sentras has been reported in "at least three crashes" in which the airbag malfunction caused improper deployment of airbags, leading to "moderate injuries."

The other Nissan vehicles which are being recalled include model-year 2013-16 Altima; 2014-17 Rogue; 2016-17 Maxima; 2015-16 Murano; 2013-17 Pathfinder; 2013-16 Leaf, and the 2014-16 Infiniti Q50 and QX60.

The airbag problem prompting the recall of these vehicles is that the passenger seat airbag may not get deployed when required, because the Occupant Classification System sensor fails to register that the seat is occupied by an adult.

In announcing the recall of 3.5 million vehicles worldwide, Nissan said that it has developed a plan to fix the airbag issues in the affected vehicles; and added: "The planned remedy varies by vehicle and will include software reprogramming in some models and hardware replacement in other models."
