Naps results in poorer night sleep for young children, study

According to a new study by Australian researchers, day time naps the age of two may result in poor sleeps at night.

Researchers at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) said that childnre who have naps during the day may not sleep well at night. Professor Karen Thorpe from QUT's Faculty of Health and Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation (IHBI) led the study into the sleeping behaviour of children.

The team of researchers reviewed 26 international and Australian studies linked to children under five and found that there is evidence against the perceived benefits of day time napping. Professor Thorpe said that it is widely believed that napping in pre-school children promoted growth. However the study showed that it has a negative impact on night sleep patterns of children aged three and over.

She also said that the team studied the development and health outcomes of children's sleep in relation to cognition, behavior, salivary cortisol, obesity, and accidents. They found a link between daytime napping and poorer quality of night sleep."There is consistent high quality data that indicates napping beyond the age of two lengthens the amount of time it takes for a child to fall asleep," she said.

The study titled, "Napping, development and health from 0-5 years: a systematic review" was published in UK's BMJ's online Archives of Disease in Childhood.
