More women asking about IUDs after Trump’s victory

Amid increased concerns over the potential end of birth control services through the Affordable Care Act (ACA), more and more women are searching about long-lasting birth control methods like intrauterine devices (IUDs).

President-elect Donald Trump repeatedly vowed during his election campaign that he would scrap the ACA. He also proposed to punish women who opt for abortions as well as doctors who help in the procedure.

Dr. Adam Jacobs, of obstetrics/gynecology & reproductive science department at Mount Sinai-based Icahn School of Medicine, said, “We have seen a clear-cut increase in discussion through electronic medical records [and] discussions with patient at gynecologist visits.”

Jacobs stressed that women increasingly voiced their concerns about access to birth control methods and inquired about devices like IUDs after Trump won the presidential election. Google searches for devices like IUDs also increased exponentially after Trump’s victory.

IUD is an enduring form of long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARC). Depending on the type, an IUD can last for up to a decade.

However, several health experts have cautioned that the birth control methods like IUDs may be effective but many of such devices may not be right for every woman.
