MIT’s Cheetah Robot now capable of jumping over objects

The new so-called cheetah robot developed by the researchers at the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology is now capable of making amazing jumps over a series of hurdles.

The team uploaded a YouTube video of the new age robot called, Cheetah 2 robot. The video shows that robotautonomously jumping over a number of obstacles. In the beginning the robot is put through its paces on a treadmill and several objects are thrown on its path. It then analyses the object and makes the jump to avoid hurdles.

The team has embedded a series of new and intricate algorithms enabling the robot to determine the oncoming object's height and distance and calculate the exact time to make the jump in order to avoid hitting the object. The robot uses its Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) sensor fixed on its head to analyse the dimensions and distance of an object. The robot then applies a specific amount of force on the other side of the obstacle to land safely on the other side.

Sangbae Kim, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the institute, "A running jump is a truly dynamic behaviour. You have to manage balance and energy, and be able to handle impact after landing. Our robot is specifically designed for those highly dynamic behaviours."
