Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi will mediate for resolution of Platinum Strike

Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi said that the government will take action to help the mine workers and the management reach a positive conclusion for the matter pending for more than four months.

Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union had called for platinum workers strike in January this year for wage hike and other benefits for the workers. However, the management of three major mines in the country had declined their demands. The management was ready to offer smaller compensation but the union had rejected the offer.

Due to strike at three major mines, the economic indicators have started witnessing the impact. The global output of platinum has decreased by 40 percent. The strike has continued for more than four months. The mining output has declined by nearly 25 percent.

Mineral Resources Minister Ngoako Ramatlhodi added that the government should treat the AMCU and its members with respect. He added that he is ready to mediate to resolve the deadlock between the mineworkers and the management. ANC has returned back to power and the new cabinet has sworn in. The delay in resolution of the matter will have a major impact on the economy and the currency.
