Meat-eaters contribute more to climate change than vegetarians & vegans: study

Meat-eaters are more responsible for the growing problem of climate change than vegetarians and vegans, a new study conducted in the United Kingdom claims.

A team of researchers compared the difference in greenhouse gas emissions/carbon emissions from nearly 55,000 meat and fish eaters, vegetarians and vegans in the United Kingdom. The researchers found that meat-eaters' greenhouse gas emissions were twice as high as vegans'.

While vegans were found accounting for around 2.89 kilograms of CO2 per 2,000 kilocalories consumed, medium meat eaters were found accounting for 5.63 kilograms of CO2. High meat eaters accounted for a whopping 7.19 kilograms of Co2. However, fish eaters and vegetarians were almost similar, measuring in at 3.91 and 3.81 kilograms of CO2, respectively.

The study concludes, "Reducing the intake of meat and other animal based products can make a valuable contribution to climate change mitigation."

The researchers pointed out that production, transportation and storage of food contributes a lot to the green house emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions occur at every level of agriculture, ranging from farming to transportation and storage. Agriculture accounts for 14 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Meat contributes much more to greenhouse gas emissions than plants, partly thanks to livestock's methane emissions.

The study appeared in the most-recent edition of journal Climatic Change.
