Lord Saatchi says drug funding cuts may cause anxiety among people

LordMaurice Saatchi has warned that the government's decision to implement cuts to crucial drug treatments announced will cause great anxiety among thousands of people in the UK.

Lord Saatchi, who is leading conservative peer and advertising tycoon, said that he has been "immersed" with cancer recently with loved ones suffering from the disease. His wife died of cancer and he is now critical of the government's decision to cut NHS funding. The move comes as charities and industry experts warned that NHS England's decision to cut funding a series of cancer drugs was "short-sighted" and wouldendanger lives of people in the UK.

A review by the Cancer Drugs Fund, which was published today, that stated that cancer patients would no longer be denied drugs on grounds of cost. About half of the 25 drugs under review will not be included in funding after the decision to cut funding is implemented. These drugs are used in 42 treatments for the patients.

The decision by the government comes amid higher costs and the budget has already been increased form initial £200 million to £280 million due to increased demand.

"There is a sense of possibility with the Cancer Drugs Fund. Withdrawing funding is going to cause people who would potentially benefit from the treatments great anxiety. I am immersed with cancer as friends and loved ones around me suffer from the same disease which also took my wife," he said.
