Less intake of alcohol can also cause damage

An new research is in a sharp contrast to usual belief that a couple of glasses of wine a night can actually help your heart as this new research says that even the smallest amount of hard alcohol or wine that an individual consumes, can have an impact on health.

Previous researches conducted till date had concluded that small amounts of alcohol can be beneficial but the scientists now believe that such results could have been influenced by the fact that people who drink less are more likely to lead healthier lifestyles on a broader prospective with balanced diets and exercise as compared to hardcore alcoholics.

Also, an important thing to be noted is that people carrying the ADH1B genetic variant that is -associated with non-drinking and lower consumption had a "more favorable cardiovascular profile" than those who did not have it i. e. the excessive drinkers.

This recent research that gave a contrary verdict as against all previous researches in this field involved researchers considering drinking habits of more than 250,000 people in 56 separate studies. This was done by scientists at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University College London and University of Pennsylvania in the US.

This research concluded that that people who drank less had a 10 per cent lower risk of coronary heart disease and just 12 units a week that is less than a pint of beer or one large glass of wine a day can have a negative effect on health.
