Leadbeater’s possum added to critically endangered list

The federal government have announced their decision to add Leadbeater's possum to the list of "critically endangered" animals in the water.

The decision came at a time when the Federal Government announced its plans for the national Threatened Species Summit that is to be organised at Melbourne Zoo on 25 July, 2015. Federal Environment Minister Greg Hunt said that he has now changed the possum from "endangered" to "critically endangered" to point out the situation. He was speaking at the Healesville Sanctuary today.

Leadbeater's possums are usually found in parts of Yellingbo and Toolangi Forest. Their numbers have fallen 90 per cent since the 1980s. Mr. Hunt has said that the change in the list will ensure that the species will receive the highest level of protection under national environment law in Australia.

He also said that the Federal Government will work with state government in Victoria to ensure the survival of the possums. The species is threatened because half of their ideal habitat in the Central Highlands were destroyed during the bushfires in 2009.

The Wilderness Society's Victorian campaigns manager Amelia Young has welcomed the decision by the federal government.
