Internet Censorship by China creates Hurdle in Carrying out Smooth Business

China has again beefed up its great firewall and this time it is cracking down on virtual private networks (VPNs), which allow users with an access to censored and blocked content on web.

The move confirmed by the state media has affected VPN providers including Astrill, Strong VPN and Golden Frog.

China since long has been blocking content which it deems as sensitive Internet content. Under its category fall the political commentary, foreign news outlets and sites like Google. Also access to Twitter, Facebook and YouTube has also been blocked in China. China's effort which is officially called 'Golden Shield' is more than a decade old.

It has been found that VPN allows Chinese and foreigners similar to circumvent the Great Firewall. VPN users are able to access blocked websites, Gmail and even Netflix for around $10 per month.

It has been found that Chinese state media called the crackdown as a healthy development for the Internet, and one needed to shore up cyber security. It follows a move to tighten access to Google's email service that began late last year.

Although larger firms with proprietary VPNs are better protected, but more foreign companies are reporting that Chinese Internet restrictions are making it very difficult for them to carry out a smooth business.

In addition, a survey conducted in 2014 by the American Chamber of Commerce in China, 56% of the American companies operating in China said that Internet censorship was having a negative or somewhat negative impact on their ability to conduct business.
