Industry leaders urge Trump to approve Dakota Access Pipeline

Industry leaders have urged President-elect Donald Trump to approve the highly-disputed Dakota Access Pipeline that would span four states and cross under a Missouri River reservoir in southern part of North Dakota near the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.

The $3.8 billion oil pipeline project has long been opposed by environmentalists and locals. Earlier this week, the U.S. Department of the Army declared that it wouldn’t allow the pipeline to be drilled under the dammed section of the Missouri River.

The department’s assistant secretary for civil works, Jo-Ellen Darcy, said, “The best way to complete that work responsibly and expeditiously is to explore alternate routes for the pipeline crossing.”

The American Petroleum Institute that represents the American oil & natural gas industry and the MAIN Coalition that represents agriculture, business and labor entities have urged Trump to pave the way for the project’s completion when he enters the White House next month.

Trump has expressed support for the construction of the controversial pipeline, but he hasn’t declared his stance on whether he would reverse the Army’s decision.

Opponents, including the Standing Rock tribe, argue that the oil pipeline would threaten natural water resources as well as cultural sites.
